Athletics and Activities Update October 16th

Girls’ Soccer

Head Coach Eric Yanke

The Girls’ soccer team had a thrilling last week.  Our final regular season game was played in Cold Spring on Tuesday versus Rocori.  It was an incredibly even game.  The score was tied at zero until the last minute thanks to an incredible defensive effort from Jordyn Tomaszewski ’12 in goal.  With just 15 second left in the game, Lizzy Kolb ’11 worked her way into the opponents 18 yard box and forced a foul.  She was rewarded with a penalty kick which she calmly placed in the lower left corner for a game winning goal.  This late game winner was certainly one of the most memorable moments in the season.  The win versus Rocori set up the Johnnies to play Apollo in the section playoffs.  The girls played an incredible determined and gritty game on Thursday night under the lights at Apollo.  In the end, the Eagles prevailed 3-0.

Boys’ Soccer

Head Coach Dan Stark

Varsity:  The Johnnies finished the regular season with a 10-4-1 record and earned the #2 seed in Section 8A – a tremendous accomplishment! Thursday, the Johnnies faced Rocori in the first game of section play.  Things started well with first half goals by Ben Jolkovsky ’18 and Nick McGee (18.  Rocori was able to cut the deficit to one by halftime and then scored two goals in the last 20 minutes to get the victory.  The team thanks their parents and fans who were so supportive throughout the season!

JV:  Last Monday, the Boys’ JV soccer team played one of their best games of the season. They competed against Cathedral at Whitney field in St. Cloud. Cathedral played well, but our lock-down defense and ball distribution in the midfield was well executed. Nico scored early in the first half and went on to get another goal in the second. Both Liam and Felix found the back of the net for their first goals of the season. The final score was 4-1. What a great way to end the season! JJ and I would like to thank the team for their dedication and hard work the last two months. We also appreciate the parents and fans who have supported our team all season long.

Girls’ Tennis

The girls’ ended their season this week with the individuals section tournament in Litchfield. Regan Mies’18 and Vicky Zhu ’18 entered the singles draw. Annie Ellis ’18 paired with Anna Zheng  ’18 and Sami Severnak ’20 paired with Miranda Curnutt ’20 for the two doubles team. All fought hard against tough opponents, but none were able to advance. Thanks to all the parents who made the treks to the away meets. Thanks also to the parents and fans who attended the home meets to cheer on the team. A special thanks to the three senior captains, Annie, Anna, and Regan, who kept the enthusiasm high this season.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country team competed in their last Invitational at Royalton this last Tuesday.  Our Boys’ Junior High team placed two people in the top FIVE with Mathew Bolton ’22 placing 3rd and Sam Meyer ’22 placing 1st among a field of over 40 runners!  The Girls Junior High team was led by Sylvia Johnson ’22 in 2nd Place and Sophia Kapoor ’24 following right behind with 3rd place!  Our JV Girls’ team continues to work hard and improve with Katie John ’19 placing 1st and Rafi Fridrich ’20 placing 10th over all!  Finally, our Boys’ Varsity placed Luc Westling ’20 in the top 10 at 7th place and a team placement of 4th place overall in a field of 9 teams!  The competition is getting fierce and we are on the upswing with our Conference Meet scheduled for Tuesday, October 17, at Kimball Golf Course.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Head Coach Jen Daiker

The girls’ swimming and diving took on yet another section competitor last night with Mora/Oglivie. The meet started out with several very close races, but by the time diving started, the girls’ were up 32 – 30. From there, they fought to stay in the lead until the very end, scoring 98 to Mora/Oglivie’s 85. This is the 4th win for the team this season putting them at 4 – 3 overall with one dual meet left.

Middle School Soccer

Head Coach Ettien Koffi

This week the Middle School Soccer team played 3 games resulting in a win, loss, and tie. They started the week with a 12-0 win over Chain of Lakes. Overall, the team deserves a round of applause towards their contribution to the win. On Tuesday, they played Melrose and unlike the last time we played them; they brought their A game. In the first half, one of their players scored a goal for us, kneeing the ball into their own net. The rest of the game they controlled, but our defense stayed strong. They scored another goal in the second half and we came back with scoring a goal from almost half field by Logan Richter ’22 with an assist from Eli Perry ’23. Then on Thursday, we headed to Little Falls where we ended in a tie. We were down 2-0 going into the second half. With about ten minutes remaining, Peter Heroux ’22 headed a corner kick by Eli Perry ’23 to make the score 2-1. With time almost running out, Anson Mies ’22 got a breakaway goal down the right side to tie the game 2-2. With almost playing every game this week short handed with players, I am very proud of all the players for playing their hardest and their endurance to play the whole game without a sub. GO JOHNNIES!
