Girls’ Soccer

Head Coach Eric Yanke
The Johnnies Girls Soccer had a full slate of three home games this week. The games were exciting, intense, and incredibly competitive. On Tuesday September 5th the Johnnies played Little Falls in a tight contest. Valeriya Woodard scored a goal in the first half but the Flyers were able to come back and score two goals in the second half.

Thursday, the Johnnies played rival Cathedral in what turned out to be a spectacular game. After a first half with no goals for either side, Reid Nydeen started the scoring off of a free kick. Cathedral tied the game with a goal but the Johnnies quickly responded with a goal from Lizzy Kolb to retake the lead. With only seven minutes left Cathedral scored a second goal to force the game into overtime. With just minutes left in the game, Cathedral scored on a penalty kick to pull ahead for good. The game ended with a final score of 4-2 in favor of Cathedral.
On Saturday, Cambridge came to campus and won 3-0 over the Johnnies in a very competitive game.

Boys’ Soccer

Head Coach Dan Stark

On Tuesday, September 5, the boys’ varsity played at Little Falls in very windy conditions. The Johnnies prevailed 2-0 with goals scored by senior Kevin Stark-Haws and junior Christian Garcia. Senior Nick Foss was a brick wall against the Flyers offense with a couple amazing saves and supported by the defense.

On Thursday, the Johnnies hosted the Cathedral Crusaders. The Crusaders scored two early goals; but the Johnnies were able to fight back. Goals scored by junior Christian Garcia and senior John Martone tied the game by halftime.  The play was even in the second half until Cathedral was able to score late to take the lead and added an insurance goal in the final minutes.

Girls’ Tennis

Head Coach Mark Muntifering
Assistant Coach Charles Miller

The girls’ tennis team has had a fantastic week of conference play. First, we matched up against Osakis and BBE in a tri, topping BBE 6-1,  but dropping to the 2016 conference champs Osakis 0-7. On Tuesday, LPGE came to the SJU courts, and we beat them 5-2. It was also the first varsity win for Kelsey Christianson.

Finally, on Thursday we traveled to Parkers Prairie for a traditionally tough battle. We were able to fight off bees, mosquitoes, and bus-lag as well as injuries, but couldn’t quite pull out the win, falling 3-4. Registering wins were Regan Mies at 2 singles with a gritty third set win, Anna Zheng at 3rd singles, winning 6-2, 7-6(2), and the doubles powerhouse of Andrienne Gefre and Lucy Cheeley, coming back from a 0-4 deficit in the first set to take a 3rd set win. Several JV players also made the courts, finding some successes and things to work on.

Cross Country

Head Coach Lance Nydeen

Last week Cross Country participated in a meet at Holdingford.  It was the first time we were able to enter our entire roster.
Some highlights are:
Boys’ JH placed third in a field of 10 teams with outstanding perfomances by Sam Meyer (7) 5th place and Mathew Bolton (7) in 13th Place in their first Meet of the year!
The boys were led by the strong Varsity performances of Luc Westling (10) in 9th place for a second straight under top 10 performance,
and rising star Jeremiah Weber improved his time and placed higher than last week with 46th place!
Girls were led by the strong performance of Katie John (11) with a strong 8th place in JV! Great Job Johnnies!

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Head Coach Jen Daiker

Girls swimming and diving had two meets last week. The first took place on Tuesday against Sauk Centre, with the girls putting up good fight and some great times, but falling short against the Mainstreeters 110 – 79.

Thursday’s meet was the first home meet of the season at Saint John’s vs Milaca, a competitor in the new section. With the strong competition from Milaca, the teams were scoring close the entire meet until the final event, the 400 Free relay. The girls were able to pull off a win with a final score of 99 – 86, getting 1st and 3rd in the final race. Justine Meyer(10) had some strong varsity times in the 50 and 100 free, Sophie Hwang(8) received her personal best time in the 100 fly with 1:09, and Cambel Sheperd(7) had a great 500 free race with a personal best of 6:14.

The team will have a week off of competitions before continuing their next few meets at the end of September.
