In Memoriam ~ Lucille Winter, mother of Yvonne Schilplin, grandmother to Fred Schilplin ’96 and Chad Schilplin ’00

Lucille Winter passed away peacefully at the Mahnomen Health Center on December 4, 2018. She was born in Beaulieu, August 17, 1926 to Herman and Cecelia Schoenborn. Lucille married the love of her life on November 13, 1945 at St. Joseph Church, Beaulieu. They raised 14 children on their dairy farm west of Waubun where they lived for 51 years and upon retiring moved to Waubun.

Lucille was a loving wife and mother, and a compassionate and caring grandmother and great-grandmother. She nurtured with unconditional love, listening intently to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with great determination, and a remarkable, uncanny ability to get you to do your household chores without being asked. She was a sincere comfort to her friends and family and a pillar of strength and faith that carried her through the most difficult of times. A spark of competition and perfectionism guided her through her many talents – many loaves of fresh baked bread or dozens of homemade cookies welcomed you home from school or greeted many a passer by. Holidays were filled with anticipation for newly designed outfits, homemade pies and Christmas breads and the table always welcomed an unexpected guest.

She was a long-time member of St Ann’s Church, serving as Eucharistic Minister, Religious Ed. teacher, and an active member, holding various offices in the Ladies Aid, Foresters, Catholic Daughters and Homemakers.   She worked as a Hospice volunteer, a caregiver at Hillview Assisted Living, and was employed by the Post Office.

Lucille and Milo were recipients of the 1981 Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award and honored as the 2017 Northland Diocese Senior Couple receiving the Bishop’s Medal.  They also were “American Mom and Dad” to Manabu, a Japan exchange student who is a gracious recipient of their unending love.

She is survived by 13 children: Yvonne Schilplin, Fargo, ND, Kenneth Winter, Waubun, MN, Karen (Todd) Renner, Detroit Lakes, MN, Barbara Jarett, Duvall, WA, Joyce (Michael) Stromberg, Marionette, WI, Janice (Brent) Mielke, Sleepy Eye, MN, Kathy Winter Jackson,  Mahnomen, MN, Peggy (Roger) Francis, Mahnomen, MN, Mark (Ammie) Winter, Detroit Lakes, MN, Caroline (Gary) Johnson, Fargo, ND, Clyde (Monica) Winter, Twin Valley, MN, MaryKay (Dale) Nelson, Glyndon, MN, Bruce (Tammy) Winter, Waubun, MN; 34 Grandchildren: Freddy, Chad, Jason, Melanie, Jessica, Samantha, MeLinda, MiRinda, Montana, Marshall, Adam, Karlee, Jeffrey, Tammy, Tyler, Anthony, Adam, Austin, Kassidy, Jacqueline, Cassandra, Lauren, Cecelia, Marghie, Milo, Michael, Nicholas, Jasmine, Zachery, Sabrina, Tyson, Tracee, Taylor, and Tessa; 28 great-grandchildren;  brothers and sisters-in-law: Laverne (Verla) Schoenborn, Delmar (Betty) Schoenborn, Anthony (Joan) Schoenborn, Sylvester (Pat) Schoenborn, sisters-in-law, Eleanor Schoenborn and Lillian Winter, and brother-in-law Ted Winter.
