2020 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends,

2020 was unlike any other year in recent memory at Prep. In March, we transitioned from on-campus learning to eLearning, an experiment we brought to scale in less than a week. After months of planning over the summer, we successfully launched the new school year in August, grateful for the opportunity to be together again. Though the rhythms and practices of the school day are quite different than in prior years, we have many reasons to celebrate our students’ enthusiasm and positive outlook, their laughter, determination and resilience. Our students, faculty and staff, and families have risen to the challenges of the pandemic with courage and grace.

We also have experienced a tremendous outpouring of support for the school and our future. Last spring, we hosted our first-ever on-line fundraising event, among the most successful Grand Tour of Nations in the last decade. This summer, we successfully completed the Saint Michael Hall building project, the largest single capital project since the school was constructed in 1962. We also raised in less than four weeks the funds necessary to equip each of our classrooms with the technology required to deliver our instruction remotely for those unable to attend school in-person. All of this was made possible by the generosity of hundreds and hundreds of donors. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, I want to express our gratitude for the support of this wonderful community.

For more than a century and a half, Saint John’s Prep has provided exceptional education in the Catholic Benediction tradition. From our founding in the mid-19th century by an immigrant monastic community to our contemporary identity as a rigorous college preparatory school, Prep has continuously dedicated itself to educational development and personal formation. We remain deeply committed to academic achievement and to moral and character development, preparing our students for lives of purpose, service and achievement.

As educators, our work lives at the intersection of aspiration, inspiration, and opportunity – a place that vividly reflects the wonder of possibility. It takes a village of family, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to educate each of our students and prepare them for their future. We are defined by the people who nurture, support, and sustain us. We have worked hard to provide a school environment that is healthy and safe this year. At the same time, we continue to look beyond the pandemic to a future filled with possibility. Now more than ever, we need to come together as a community in support of our students, our school, and our future. Thank you for all you do for Saint John’s Prep! We thrive because of your support and commitment.

With gratitude,

Jon McGee

"Without your generosity, we would be unable to provide a Catholic Benedictine college preparatory experience. You are shaping the lives of young men and women who I am convinced will make a significant impact in our world."
