The Story
Based on true events, That’s Just the Way It Is a biographical musical written by Brandon Anderson, Theatre Director at Saint John’s Preparatory School, with music composed by SJP senior Kai Kang. The story follows one man’s journey of self-discovery as he searches for acceptance of his rare multi-system genetic disease, Tuberous Sclerosis.
The show is an invitation for audiences to observe the constraints of physical disabilities and through the magic of theatre look deeper into the consciousness of a person. By tearing down the walls of shame, humiliation, and indignity we witness the heartfelt touching tale of overcoming one of life’s most challenging obstacles.
This production will be staged at Saint John’s Prep in the Weber Center. Parking is available in front of the school.

NEW! On Saturday night, June 17 we’re hosting dinner and trivia at Brother Willie’s Pub in Sexton Commons. Please join us as Trish Cook ’91 leads us through a rowdy trivia game of knowledge and luck. There will be some very unique and very Prep prizes for the winners!
About Trish Cook ’91 Besides being an amazing member of the Prep Class of 1991, Trish is a well known comedian and trivia host in the Twin Cities. Expect lots of laughs and fun with Trish during her Trivia Night!

Burgers, Brews and Brats Before the game, John Sipe ’61 is hosting a fun cookout that includes burgers, brews and brats. He’s hosting a pregame social and bbq at his building and courtyard next door to CHS Stadium in downtown Saint Paul.

Convocation Saint John’s Abbey Church 9:00am
Saint John’s Prep will launch our 167th school year on August 23, 2023. The year will begin with the annual convocation ceremony at 8:30am in the Saint John’s Abbey Church. The program includes a march of flags, blessings, words of wisdom and inspirational messages. Speakers will include Saint John’s Abbey Abbot and Saint John’s Prep Chancellor John Klassen, OSB ’67, Principal Dr. Christine Glomski, Head of School Jon McGee and Student Council President Patrick Duffy ’24. Parents, siblings and grandparents are welcome to attend this very special event!
More than 285 students from 15 countries, three states, and 25 different Minnesota communities will be on campus this fall. We’re currently enrolling students for the 2023-24 academic year, and our Saint John’s Prep Admission team members are available to connect with you via phone or Zoom to answer questions and offer you a tour of our Middle School, Upper School, residence halls, and our gorgeous campus.

The Saint John’s Prep Theatre Department is bringing Disney’s A Hunchback of Notre Dame to life! The cast and crew is bringing this sweeping score and powerful story to the stage at the Paramount Center for the Arts March 22-24, 2024! Be prepared to be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical!
This production will take you to Paris with an epic cathedral size set, vivid backdrops and exciting special effects. More than 60 Saint John’s Prep students in grades 6-12 are bringing this tale to life! The shows will also feature a background choir with singers from the Great River Chorale, Saint John’s Abbey, and Saint John’s Prep alumni. Be prepared for powerful performances and heart stopping music!
The story comes from the book by Victor Hugo and includes songs from the Disney film. Prep’s production is set at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and features the title character, Quasimodo, who is the cathedral’s bell-ringer. Quasimodo’s uncle is the intimidating Dom Claude Frollo who orders Quasi to stay hidden in the bell tower. Quasimodo defies his uncle and leaves the church and befriends the beautiful Esmeralda. The show follows Quasimodo’s efforts to protect Esmeralda from his uncle.
