June 5-9, 2024 Register for Session
Join us for an unforgettable experience this summer as we come together to build an outdoor classroom amidst the stunning natural beauty of the Saint John’s Prep campus. Led by the Avon Hills Folk School, who will provide their expertise in traditional timber-frame construction, these two five-day course sessions offer a hands-on opportunity to learn the skills of traditional timber framing while contributing to our commitment to environmental education.
Participants will experience the artistry and technique of timber framing, using those skills to construct a 24-foot by 36-foot classroom-in-the-woods. Guided by expert artisans, you will learn the intricacies of layout, joinery, and assembly, as well as the principles of sustainable construction practices.
Scheduled over two five-day sessions, June 5 to June 9 and July 10 to July 14, 2024, participants will work collaboratively to bring the outdoor classroom to life. From constructing the timber frames to installing roof rafters, every aspect of the process will provide a hands-on learning opportunity, fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship.
Both sessions are open to students, parents, faculty/staff, and alumni and friends of Saint John’s Prep. They require no prior experience with building or timber framing. Whether you are a novice eager to learn new skills or a seasoned builder looking to deepen your knowledge, this program welcomes participants of all backgrounds and abilities.
Spaces are limited to 10 participants per five-day session. Registration is now open, with a cost of $400 for adults and a discounted $200 price for students per five-day session. Students must enter the code SJPSTUDENTS to receive the discount price. We will provide lunch daily, along with a communal meal on one evening of each session.
Upon the completion of the outdoor classroom, all course participants will be invited to a special “Raising and Dedication” party to celebrate our collective achievement. This festive event will honor the dedication and hard work of all those involved in bringing the outdoor classroom to life, a fitting culmination to our shared journey of craftsmanship and collaboration.
Join us as we begin this unique project to create a lasting legacy for Saint John’s Prep and showcase our commitment to environmental stewardship. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity. Reserve your spot today and be part of something truly special!

The Class of 1964 is planning an exciting 60th class reunion! Please save the date of June 28-30, 2024 for this wonderful event to reconnect and reminisce. We have planned a Friday night dinner just for the Class of ‘64 in the old Alumni Lounge (Quad 170). There will be a piano available in case anyone would like to play and sing at the same time?! I wonder who that could be? The fee for the dinner is $60 per person and includes dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks. Online registration is now closed. Contact Alumni and Community Engagement Manager Hazel Anderson-Larson
In addition, we have made arrangements to “tour” the old dorms on the 5th floor of the Quad. We hear that it is still much the same, but we want to verify that in person. Besides the Friday activities for the Class of 64, the “all-school” events are scheduled for Saturday, including lectures, tours of the “new” dorm Saint Michael Hall, group pictures, and a big frolicking dinner at Sexton Commons. You may know that the Class of ‘74 is celebrating 50 years of women at the Prep School, so that will be a special celebration.
Looking forward to seeing you and your spouse/partner on June 28th. Registration online is at www.sprep.net/events.
