Show Summary
On All Hallow’s Eve of 1995, a dinner party is held at the Upstate New York manor of Dr. Julian Fox: the enigmatic millionaire and owner of the Sunrise Sentinel, known for its dedication to exposing corruption amidst the high ranking members of government. By the end of the night, the media mogul would be dead, and not a soul alive can tell what really happened. Now, it’s up to Detective Inspector Ethel Carter and her dedicated team of officers to sort out the truth locked within the twisting halls of memory. The catch? All of the suspects are firmly convinced that they themselves are to blame. Join us for an evening of mystery, comedy, and unreliable narrators in this subverted take on the classic Whodunnit genre.

Saint John’s Prep Theatre presents “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” This opera tells the story of Amahl, a young disabled boy with a vivid imagination, whose life changes when three kings—on a journey to honor a wondrous child—seek shelter at his home. Amahl’s mother is skeptical and desperate over their poverty, but she is moved by the king’s generosity. When she attempts to take their gold to care for her son, the kings forgive her, recognizing her hardship. Inspired, Amahl selflessly offers his crutch as a gift for the child, leading to a miraculous healing. The story beautifully illustrates themes of faith, compassion, and the transformative power of giving.

This story will be told with 23 stunning puppets. These are life-size puppets and each need several performers to bring to life!  These puppets were commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II and created by the Little Angel Puppet Theatre of London, England. Since they arrived in Minnesota after their restoration in 2008, the Amahl Puppets have been back on stage for a dozen performances across Minnesota.

Amahl and the Night Visitors is a one-act opera commissioned by NBC Television originally broadcast live on December 24th, 1951. Written by Gian Carlo Menotti and performed in English, the libretto tells the simple yet powerful story of the Three Magi who stop for a night on their journey to Bethlehem.
