2023 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends,

Among the joys of working in education is that each year we begin anew. We lead with new students, new opportunities, and new dreams. Each year reminds us that we are always becoming; we never become. Nineteenth century American essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, described this growth and renewal most succinctly: “Don’t be pushed by your problems, be lead by your dreams.”

At our opening convocation last fall, I reminded our students that they could do or become anything they imagined. The canvas of their lives remained to be painted however they chose. I encouraged them to take time this year to expand their mind, expand their experience, and expand their heart. That is what we do best, and have always done best, at Saint John’s Prep. We develop minds with a heart and hearts with a mind, a reflection of the Catholic Benedictine values that have defined us for more than a century and a half.

We’ve had another tremendous year at Prep. We enrolled 296 students last fall, our highest total since fall 2012. School enrollment has grown by 16% in the last five years. Our students hailed from 16 different nations and came from 29 different communities in Minnesota. We retained our rating as the #1 Catholic high school in Minnesota, ranked among the top 30 Catholic high schools in the country and included among the top 350 schools in the country for STEM education. The school pulses with energy, imagination, and creativity.

It is a remarkably exciting time at Saint John’s Prep. Last fall we fully launched our new Aspire to Excellence curriculum, a generational curricular change that challenges our students to own their learning experience as deeply creative thinkers, intellectual risk-takers, and imaginative problem-solvers. It is both distinctive and distinctively Prep. Looking ahead, we will soon embark on the largest comprehensive capital campaign in the school’s history – a campaign which seeks to secure and advance our best-in-class learning experience and the Benedictine values that drive it. As a school, we will continue to dream, to aspire, and to live and act with a forward cast.

Saint Benedict calls us to “run while you have the light of life.” We continue to run at Prep, focused on the work of creating the future one student at a time. We are defined by the people who nurture, support, and sustain us. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I want to express our gratitude for your support of this wonderful community. We thrive because of you!

With gratitude,

Jon McGee
