Joey Stock ’16 Signs with the Boston Red Sox

Joey Stock ’16

Saint John’s Prep is proud to congratulate Joey Stock ’16 for signing with the Boston Red Sox organization. A member of the Class of 2016, Joey was also a member of our first sixth grade class. Four years after graduating from Prep with a Communications degree in hand from Saint John’s University, Joey has been given an opportunity by the Boston Red Sox to make his professional baseball dreams a reality.

“Every young kid dreams of playing professionally and I was no different. I wasn’t even sure if I would play in college.  To have this opportunity is certainly is a dream come true,” Joey told Saint John’s Prep.

A 2020 graduate of Saint John’s University and four-year member of the university’s baseball team, Joey competed with the St. Cloud Rox baseball club this summer and was preparing to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on a baseball scholarship with the D-I Panthers before the Red Sox came calling.

While Saint John’s Prep is well-known for its outstanding academic programming and college placement of its graduates, Joey is especially proud of his high school athletic experience. “More than anything, I was given opportunities to play and meet new people. I played baseball and basketball for four years and soccer for two. I was able to play and make friends with guys from around the world.”

Saint John’s Prep Athletic and Activities Director Bryan Backes is very excited for Joey and his family. “Joey has been so much fun to watch develop. At Prep, he loved sports and constantly was wearing various pro jerseys to school. His success is due to his tireless work ethic.  And he persevered through the times when things didn’t go his way- which is critical to being a successful athlete! I am very proud of Joey and happy for the great Stock family.”

Joey is the son of Lori and Tom Stock of Cold Spring. He is the younger brother of Jacob Stock ’13 of Minneapolis. Tom Stock serves our school as a member of the Saint John’s Prep Board of Regents.

Joey remains a supportive alum of Saint John’s Prep. He’s quick to offer support for our teams and athletes. He’s also vocal about the support he received from Saint John’s faulty and staff. Earlier this month, he helped the St. Cloud Rox recognize his former Physics teacher, Charles Miller, as an outstanding teacher.

Joey is thankful for the outstanding teammates and mentors he had at Saint John’s Prep as he developed as a person and a player.  “I was given the opportunity to play varsity baseball as a freshman alongside some really talented juniors and seniors. I learned a lot from them. With their support and encouragement, they helped me develop confidence, so when it was time to play in front of college coaches and scouts, I wasn’t nervous. I am grateful for my teammates at Prep who helped me get to where I am today. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Joey says his next stop with the Boston Red Sox organization is probably to the spring training facility in Florida. Wherever he goes, we are proud of Joey and the inspiration he gives to our Prep School student athletes.
