Athletics and Activities Update May 14th Posted on May 14, 2018 in Activities, Press Releases Boys’ Tennis Mark Muntifering The co-sponsored tennis team has been busy on the courts. Cooper Chevalier ’21 won both in singles versus Apollo and doubles versus Minnewaska, playing with Ross Liu ’19. Cole Glomski ’21 and Liam Rogers ’21 teamed up in doubles, as did Jerry Jin ’20 and Jimmy Zheng ’20. On Saturday, Jack Rogers’ 18 and Christian Brenny ’18 won 2 of their 3 matches at the Granite Ridge Conference Tournament taking home the consolation championship title. Boys’ Baseball Dan Stark On Friday afternoon, the Johnnies built a four run lead early in the game with RBI from Nick Foss ’18, John Martone ’18 (two) and Kevin Stark-Haws ’12. However, a second inning two-run homer by Long Prairie cut the lead in half. The Johnnies continued to put men on base with a good hitting effort, but LPGE eventually wore the Johnnie pitching down and a big sixth inning put the game out of reach. The Johnnies will be in action at home this week against Browerville and Upsala. Playing at the SJU Stadium Friday, the Johnnies jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Ben McGee ’19 ripped a double to right center scoring Drew Richter ’18 and Alton Mies ’21. Both Drew and Alton singled in front of Ben. However, the bats went silent. Despite solid pitching from Nick Foss ’18 and Kevin Stark Haws ’18, the Johnnies fell to Upsala-Swanville Area 6-2. Middle School Boys’ Baseball Chris Backes and Camren Dehler The Johnnies defeated Upsala-Swanville-Area (USA) 10-5 Friday afternoon. The team combined for 10 hits. Leading the way was Luke Meyer ’22 with three hits. Wall Wenner ’23, Logan Richter ’22, Josh Scepaniak ’22 and Alex Math ’22 combined to pitch 6 innings giving up only 2 earned runs. The Johnnies had been scheduled to play Browerville early in the week but that game was canceled due to the forecast of rain and poor field conditions. Track & Field Lance Nydeen & Bob Ellenbecker It was another busy week for SJP Track and Field. Our first major championship meet was Tuesday’s Section 5A True Team meet at Minnewaska Area High School. We also traveled for Thursday’s meet in Melrose. We had another great week of improvement and budding stars. Some Highlights: At our True Team meet Andrew Wenner ’20 took 3rd in the 400m, Justine Meyer ’20 took 4th in the 300m Hurdles, and 3rd in the High Jump. On Thursday at the Melrose Dave Sieben Invitational, Justine Meyer took 4th again in the 300m Hurdles and 1st in the High Jump. Andrew Wenner took 1st in the 400m. (The Dave Sieben meet is named in honor the Grandfather of Emma Backes ’15). This week we will be competing in our Prairie Conference Championship Track Meet on Wednesday, May 16 at SJU Clemens Stadium! Wish our team luck.
