Athletics and Activities Update May 14th

Boys’ Tennis

Mark Muntifering

The co-sponsored tennis team has been busy on the courts.

Cooper Chevalier ’21 won both in singles versus Apollo and doubles versus Minnewaska, playing with Ross Liu ’19. Cole Glomski ’21 and Liam Rogers ’21 teamed up in doubles, as did Jerry Jin ’20 and Jimmy Zheng ’20.

On Saturday, Jack Rogers’ 18 and Christian Brenny ’18 won 2 of their 3 matches at the Granite Ridge Conference Tournament taking home the consolation championship title.

Boys’ Baseball

Dan Stark

On Friday afternoon, the Johnnies built a four run lead early in the game with RBI from Nick Foss ’18, John Martone ’18 (two) and Kevin Stark-Haws ’12. However, a second inning two-run homer by Long Prairie cut the lead in half. The Johnnies continued to put men on base with a good hitting effort, but LPGE eventually wore the Johnnie pitching down and a big sixth inning put the game out of reach. The Johnnies will be in action at home this week against Browerville and Upsala.

Playing at the SJU Stadium Friday, the Johnnies jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Ben McGee ’19 ripped a double to right center scoring Drew Richter ’18 and Alton Mies ’21. Both Drew and Alton singled in front of Ben. However, the bats went silent.  Despite solid pitching from Nick Foss ’18 and Kevin Stark Haws ’18, the Johnnies fell to Upsala-Swanville Area 6-2.

Middle School Boys’ Baseball

Chris Backes and Camren Dehler

The Johnnies defeated Upsala-Swanville-Area (USA) 10-5 Friday afternoon. The team combined for 10 hits. Leading the way was Luke Meyer ’22 with three hits. Wall Wenner ’23, Logan Richter ’22, Josh Scepaniak ’22 and Alex Math ’22 combined to pitch 6 innings giving up only 2 earned runs.

The Johnnies had been scheduled to play Browerville early in the week but that game was canceled due to the forecast of rain and poor field conditions.
