Athletics and Activities Update May 21st

Boys’ Tennis

Mark Muntifering

The tennis team earned an exciting victory in round 1 of the section 5A tournament; defeating New London-Spicer 4-3. The dynamic duo of Christian Brenny ’18 and Jack Rogers ’18 won at number 3 doubles in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (winning the tie breaker 8-6). The entire match came down to Tony Lui ’20 at number 2 singles. He and his NL-S opponent had a back and forth three-hour match; Tony won the first set 7-5 but lost the second set 4-6. Set three came down to a tie breaker which Tony won 7-5. In celebration-the team carried Tony off the court!

Earlier in the week the JV team fell to Becker 2-5.

Boys’ Baseball

Dan Stark

The Johnnies started last week’s games with a 0-13 loss to undefeated Osakis. But this did not deter the Johnnies later in the week. On Thursday, the team traveled to Isle, where Nick Foss ’18 tossed a complete game and the Johnnies won 7-2. Nick’s curve ball baffled the opposition as the Huskies struck out 10 times. Nick also led the team with three hits. Drew Richter ’18, Kevin Stark-Haws ’18 and Nick McGee ’18 added two hits a piece and Ben McGee ’19 and Kevin Stark-Haws ’18 each had 2 RBI.

Friday’s game at SJU vs Kimball was a barn burner. The Cubs jumped out to a commanding 11-0 lead but the Johnnies’ bats came alive in the third, fourth and fifth inning as the Johnnies scored 6, 4 and 5 runs to tie the game, 15-15 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Unfortunately Kimball scored 2 in the top of the sixth and 2 in the top of the seventh and the Johnnies scored once more in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 16-19. Nick Foss ’18 kept a hot bat belting a deep home run over the left field fence after following a triple by Kevin Stark-Haws ’18. Doubles were also hit by Kye Hyun Jo ’18, Ben McGee ’19 and John Martone ’18. John went 4-4 to lead the team.

The Johnnies are in action Monday vs Ogilvie and Wednesday vs Royalton.
