The Top Benefits of Choosing a Private School

Choosing a school is a complicated decision that ultimately comes down to a simple question: Where will my student thrive? At a private school like Saint John’s Prep, students enjoy a learning environment specifically designed for growth, both personal and intellectual, with an emphasis on success after graduation. The benefits of a private school education are many, and can have a profound, lifelong impact on both students and the communities in which they’ll live, work and serve.

Academic success begins with the right private school curriculum. At Saint John’s Prep, our innovative, globally-minded curriculum is built to challenge and engage students, resulting in standardized test scores that exceed both the state and national average. Our students are surrounded by global perspectives throughout their day, both in their classes and within our halls. They are taught by a staff of passionate educators, 75% of whom hold at least one Master’s degree, in small classes that abound with individual attention, engaging discussions, and the structural support students need to excel beyond their known potential.

Many private schools are established under a set of guiding principles, and Saint John’s Prep students are immersed in the Catholic Benedictine tradition. The Benedictine Values foster a respect for all people and one’s self, a love of community and stewardship, and integrity and excellence in all things. You’ll find that these values are the backbone of our inclusive community, one that celebrates diversity and shapes students into thoughtful, well-rounded citizens of the world. The spiritual guidance and true sense of community our students find at Saint John’s Prep help them grow into emotionally intelligent young adults. Our students take ownership of their education, build lifelong relationships, and come to appreciate their own individuality.

A private education can afford students a rich menu of inter-curricular and co-curricular opportunities, and Saint John’s Prep  is no exception! 100% of our Upper School (Grades 9-12) students participate in at least one activity throughout the school year. Our students can learn to play instruments and publish a school newspaper. They can take the stage in our twice-yearly theater productions and build robots. As for athletics, Saint John’s Prep offers age-appropriate competitive sports for all grade levels.

Some private school opportunities can take students even further afield. The Melk Study Abroad Program at Saint John’s Prep is one such opportunity, giving students the exciting chance to spend a year living and learning in Melk, Austria. For over 50 years, students from Saint John’s Prep have attended the Gymnasium (high school) in Melk, perfecting their German language skills and attending a full schedule of academic courses. Students live with welcoming families in the area and experience the culture first-hand, providing them with an invaluable global perspective and cherished lifelong memories.

Sending students out into the world well-prepared for the rigors of higher education is important to us, and we’re proud to share that 100% of our graduating seniors are accepted to a 4-year college or university. Our students have been accepted to top universities across the nation, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Johns Hopkins University and Stanford, and are regularly accepted to our exceptional local colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, St. Olaf and the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
