Saint John’s Prep Student Chosen to Participate in State Boys’ Honor Choir

Jack Skahen

Ninth grade Saint John’s Prep student Jack Skahen, son of Sean and Jennifer Skahen of St. Joseph, has been chosen by the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN) to participate in the State 9-10 Boys’ Honor Choir. This is the third year for Jack has earned the honor.

The Honor Choir will give a combined public performance, along with the State 9-10 Girls’ Honor Choir, at Minneapolis Convention Center’s Main Auditorium at 5:30 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Jack auditioned under the direction of the St. John’s Boys’ Choir director, Andre’ Heywood.

“I started Boys’ Choir at the end of my 5th grade year, so I’ve been in it for roughly four years. This is my last year with the choir,” Jack says. “My favorite part about being in the Boys’ choir is being able to share beautiful music with others and traveling the world.”

Each year six special honor choir projects from grades 4 through 10, are organized by ACDA-MN to provide opportunities that feature outstanding choral talent in a variety of levels such as:

State 4-5-6 Boys’ & Girls’
State 7-8 Boys’ & Girls’
State 9-10 Women’s
State 9-10 Mixed
Over 2400 students audition each year for placement into the honor choir program with approximately 830 students selected.

“Being accepted to the honor choir is a big deal to me because I know so many people try out for it and not everyone gets in,” Jack said. “I’m looking forward to the performance in February.”

At Saint John’s Prep, Jack sings under the direction of David Paulson. Jack also plays the trombone under the direction of Mr. Paulson. He will perform in the school’s musical Les Miserables, in March at the Paramount Center of the Arts. Jack is also a soccer player for Saint John’s Prep.
