Two Rising Seniors Participate in Boys’ and Girls’ State Leadership Week

Miranda And Patrick

Miranda Louis ’24 and Patrick Duffy ’24 participated in a week long government and leadership conference for young men and women. They were selected for the Minnesota American Legion Auxiliary Girls’ State and the American Legion Boys’ State based on citizenship, character, grades, and service.

Patrick attended Boys’ State at Saint John’s University. Miranda attended Girls’ State at Bethel University. Miranda’s week also included a trip to the State Capitol in St. Paul.

The week-long program helps teach young people about citizenship and government. Delegates to the event spend the week setting up a state government beginning at the lowest city level and moving up to governor. Activities include political party campaigning, leadership development, caucusing, debating and voting. Patrick says “I really enjoyed meeting new people, listening to speakers, and experiencing how city, county, and state government functions.”

The sessions were long, with their days starting at 7:00am and ending at 11:00pm. Miranda says she didn’t mind the long hours, she learned a lot and the long days were worth it. “It was an amazing week and I made some great friends.”

Both Patrick and Miranda will start their senior years at Saint John’s Prep on August 23, 2023.
