Assistant Coach Henry Smith, Jr.

In the midst of the last week of the semester and finals, the Johnnies defeated Willmar Community Christian School 53-24.  Floor leader A’ishah Smith ’18 set the tone with her defense forcing several turnovers and steals while scoring 9 points.  Justine Meyer ’20 led the scoring with 16 points as well as 9 rebounds.  Valeryia Woodard ’21 made her basketball season debut scoring 10 points and several assists; especially in the second half.   Reid Nydeen ’19 scored 9 points and her sister Jaedyn Nydeen ’22 added 6.  Lailah Corrigan ’20 added a bucket and Ruanan Li ’20 scored her first point-converting a free throw.

Boys’ Basketball

Coach Michael Moen

Beginning in 1983 Saint John’s Prep has hosted an annual boys’ basketball Christmas Tournament.  Area teams have enjoyed fun competition and great hospitality provided by Saint John’s Prep.  Retired chemistry teacher Mike Percuoco has been a part of nearly every tournament since it was initiated and again this year Mike ran the scoreboard for tournament games.  Thank you to Mike as well as Middle School Teacher Dan Stark, alum Andre’ Estevez ’14, SJU Athletic Facilities Director Nicci Malecha and ‘voice of the Johnnies’ Mark Lewandowski for helping at this year’s tournament.

The Prep boys’ basketball team had a very busy week hosting their Holiday Tournament this past Thursday through Saturday. Thursday had the boys matched up against a very strong Eden Valley Watkins squad that was able to take control in the first half and jump up by 20 points. The Johnnies were able to get their feet under them in the second half and were able to match the Eagles basket for basket most of the way from that point, but the lead that the Eagles took in the first half proved to be to much and the Johnnies ended the game 24 points shy. Seniors Nick Foss and Andrew Moen led the Johnnies in scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Friday the Johnnies found themselves up against another very tough opponent in the Milaca Wolves. The Johnnies brought some great intensity to the game and were only down by two points at the half. The Wolves were able to take advantage of a couple of runs in the second half and the Johnnies found themselves twelve points short at the final buzzer. It was a tough loss but the effort that was shown out on the court was very promising. Again, the Johnnies were led in scoring by seniors Nick Foss (16 points) and Andrew Moen (12 points).

Saturday the Johnnies really showed up to play against the Rush City Tigers. It was by far the best performance put forth by the boys to this point in the season. Great team play helped the Johnnies to jump out to a large lead and everybody was able to get plenty of playing time. Senior Henry Smith led a very effective defensive performance by putting the skids on the Tigers’ top scorer. Junior Derek Steichen had the hot hand and led all scorers with 21. Nick Foss ’18 had another solid game putting in 14 points.  Felix Huber ’20, attending through the Austrian Program, came off the bench late in the game to add a free throw and a very deep three pointer to cap off a great first win of the season. The next game for the Johnnies will be January 9th when they make the trip to Swanville to battle with the Bulldogs. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support the boys last week!
